| The
bikeways of the Island Coast come in two
varities. Bicycle paths, the most
common, are separated from traffic by
distance and, ideally, a vegetation
buffer. Bicycle lanes are a designated
part of the roadway. Cyclists also take
to rural areas, where no bikeways exist
but traffic is light. By law they must
abide by the same rules as motor
vehicles. Children under the age of 16
are required to wear a helmet. |

| Bike
trails run through Lakes Park, where
bike rentals are also available. Long
stetches of bike path in Fort Myers
follow Daniels Parkway, Metro Parkway,
Colonial Boulevard, and Summerlin Road.
The Summerlin path leads to the Sanibel
Causeway (Cyclists cross for a nominal
fee), to connect with island paths.
McGregor Boulevard's sidewalk provides
another popular scenic circuit. A recent
addition is Ten Mile Linear Park, which
follows ten mile canal from down town to
Estero. Long term plans could eventually
connect the system with a west coast
greenway extending from Tampa to Naples.
More than 2 miles of paths also wind
through Lovers Key State Park, where
rangers lead a guided bike tour monthly.
Many of
Cape Coral's city streets designate bike
lanes. Seroius bikers favor Burnt Store
Marina Road, which goes to Charlotte
County from the northwest side of town.
Sanibel's
23-mile path covers most of the island
and occasionally leaves the roadside to
plunge you into serene backwoods
scenery. The Sanibel Historical Society
(239 472-4648) distributes brochures on
pedeling Periwinkle Way and exploring by
bike or foot Old Sanibel around the
lighthouse at the east end. Cyclists can
also pedal through "Ding" Darling
National Wildlife Refuge and it's
unpaved but hard-packed Indigo Trail.
A bike
path from Pine Island Center to Saint
James City on Pine Island will be
extended north to Bokeelia.
BMX
bikers can use Sanctuary Skate Park on
some evenings. Cape Coral also has a BMX
park. |
